If your insurer is not renewing

Five steps after the letter comes

A roofer can't speak for your insurer, and we won't pretend to. We can do the roof work, photograph it and write it up so you have something to send.

  1. 01

Step 1: Read what the letter says

Some letters name a reason. Some don't. Write down any specific items.

  2. 02

Step 2: Ask your agent what your insurer credits

Which actions, in what form, and by when. Ask for it in writing.

  3. 03

Step 3: Have the roof and vents inspected

A crew lead photographs each opening and writes findings, whether or not you hire us.

  4. 04

Step 4: Do the roof items

Class A covering where it isn't, mesh on the vents, soffits where the eaves are open.

  5. 05

Step 5: Send the photos and the written scope

Your agent or insurer decides what they accept and what it changes.

State program

Safer from Wildfires: ten actions, and who does each

The California Department of Insurance lists these ten actions and says every one qualifies for an insurance discount. Doing more can mean more savings. The page doesn't say how much, so we don't either.

  • Roofer

    A Class A fire-rated roof

Most common roofs qualify. Wood shake does not.

  • You

    A 5-foot ember-resistant zone

Rock or decomposed granite against the walls; metal fencing where it meets the house.

  • Roofer

    Ember- and fire-resistant vents

Corrosion-resistant metal mesh over every vent.

  • Siding trade

A non-combustible base on exterior walls

At least six inches of non-combustible material at the bottom of the walls.

  • Roofer

    Enclosed eaves

Soffits under the eaves so heat and embers can't collect.

  • Window trade

    Upgraded windows

    Multi-pane glass or shutters.

  • You

    Clear under decks

No vegetation or debris; non-combustible surfaces below.

  • You

    Sheds and outbuildings moved out

Combustible structures at least thirty feet from the house.

  • You

    Defensible-space compliance

Follow state and local rules on trimming and clearing.

  • Neighbors

    Being safer together

    A neighborhood fire-risk reduction program.

Non-renewal questions

Will doing the roof items change my insurer's decision?

We can't say. The state says each action qualifies for a discount; whether your insurer renews depends on the insurer. Ask your agent.

Can I use your estimate as proof?

Many insurers want photos and a written scope. We give you both; your agent tells you what yours accepts.

Do you talk to my insurer for me?

No. We write up the roof work and you send it. We're glad to explain it to your agent if you ask.

What if I can't do everything on the list?

Most people can't, at once. Start with the items on the letter and the ones you can document, and do the rest over time.

Bring us the letter

We'll mark which items are roof work and write up the scope, photos included.
